Based on the short story "The Dunwich Horror" by H. P. Lovecraft in Weird Tales (Jul 1933). LITERARY SOURCE AUTHOR. H. P. Lovecraft. DETAILS.
Nancy Walker and Elizabeth Hamilton, two students who attend Miskatonic University and work in the school library, are putting away the Necronomicon , a rare book on the occult, after a lecture on the supernatural given by visiting professor Dr. Henry Armitage. Dr. Armitage discovers Wilbur Whateley memorizing ritual passages from the Necronomicon and is at first angry, but learns that Wilbur comes from nearby Dunwich, a village having a history of evil occurrences, and that Wilbur is the great-grandson of Oliver Whateley, who was hanged by the villagers as a demon. Nancy, finding herself attracted to Wilbur, offers to drive him home when he misses his bus. Later, in the old mansion where Wilbur lives with his grandfather, Wilbur drugs Nancy and sabotages her car, thus forcing her to stay for the night. (He plans to sacrifice her in a fertility rite in the hopes of gaining for himself contact with the spiritual world.) Nancy accepts his invitation to spend the

The Dunwich Horror is a tale of birth and death and terrible creatures. Based on the short story of the same name by H. P. Lovecraft, the minimalist graphic title sequence was designed by artist and graphic designer Sandy Dvore.
Dvore cut his teeth working with legendary B-movie producer and director Roger Corman, who first courted him after seeing Otto Preminger’s Skidoo (1968) and Dvore’s titles work therein. Skidoo was a light and saucy affair: comedic bickering, singing, boats, sunshine. The Dunwich Horror, on the other hand, takes its cues from the graphic minimalism of the 1960s, Lovecraft, and the terror of the unknowable.
His first excursion into graphic animation, the titles to The Dunwich Horror cleverly blend themes from the film through scale and image morphing, each silhouetted form growing and shifting into another. The title sequence acts as prologue and as summary, explaining the cold open of a woman in labour and foreshadowing events to come. The style is reminiscent of leading graphic title designers of the 1960s like Saul and Elaine Bass and Maurice Binder, with hints of Matisse and his Blue Nudes cut-outs.

The deep blue and black palette establishes a sombre sense of darkness, like a summer sky just before night sets in, while Les Baxter’s theme adds melancholy and grandeur.
Also notable here, and in Dvore’s other sequences (Blacula, for example), is th...

Dive into the groovy goodness of this post-Woodstock Necronomicon movie... I've been wanting to cover The Dunwich Horror for a while now, in part because of its stylish, hippie vibes and in part because of Dean Stockwell's presence as the haunted lead. I'd already taken Stockwell's character on as a mustache hero for my participation in Movember this year, and when Stockwell passed away on Nov. 7, I knew it was time to watch the film. So this one's for you, Dean. It's a weirdly hippie or anti-hi

Dunwich Horror from 1970 has pretty much nothing to do with the HP Lovecraft story from whence/which it came – and that’s a bone of contention for many people, Stockwell included. He was disappointed in how the movie came out – being a huge Lovecraft fan. But the point must be made that it is, essentially, a B-movie, with all the glory and mortification that that implies. It must not be taken too seriously, and it must be seen as an homage to Lovecraft – rather than a faithful adaptation. I think the thing is a HOOT. I love B-movies anyway – I love camp classics – I love Ed Wood’s movies, for example – To me, they are the best examples of the sheer JOY of film-making. And Dunwich Horror, while it definitely has much better production values than Ed Wood’s stuff, is in the same vein. It doesn’t take itself too seriously – it’s not ponderous or pretentious in the slightest – it doesn’t worry too much about itself – it is unapologetically manipulative – and frankly, it’s a blast.
